Don’t Help Criminals

A ladder left unsecured became part of criminal’s path to a break-in over the past week.

West Vancouver Police received separate residential break-in reports this week from neighbouring homes in the Dundarave/Nelson Avenue.

Both reports were prompted by people in the area noticing each of the homes had a smashed 2nd floor balcony door.  In the first report, officers arrived to find a ladder propped against the home, leading to the balcony. No alarm was triggered in either report. Active investigations are ongoing.

Please take care to avoid outdoor and especially unsecured storage of items like ladders that can be used to help criminals climb to vulnerable entry points on a home.  If you plan to be away from your home for any period and have a home alarm, ensure it is working and set when you’re away.  Reduce your risk by regularly reviewing where you might need additional intrusion sensors and what potential entry points could be accessed by a burglar.

Multi-Unit Buildings – Storage & Mail Thefts

Residents of multi-unit buildings are encouraged to review security of storage, and general building security. Thieves struck a multi-unit building in the Ambleside area, targeting storage lockers, mailboxes.  Suspects also attempting to enter a laundry room in a possible effort to get cash from coin operated machines.  Investigators believe access to the building may have been gained through a side door that had been left propped partly open.

Anytime you see activity of concern, please don’t hesitate to call West Vancouver Police. Call 604-925-7300 for non-emergency matters. Call 9-1-1 in an emergency, including events that involve immediate danger to any person or a substantive crime in progress.  For updated crime alerts anytime click westvanpolice.ca/crime-alerts.
