West Vancouver, B.C. – homeowner’s live CCTV prompts rapid police response, leading to criminal charge
On the morning of April 23rd, 2026, West Vancouver Police were alerted by a homeowner that they were witnessing someone trespass onto their property via their security cameras. A male suspect gained entry to the home and proceeded through the interior while the owner, who was temporarily off-site, continued to watch on CCTV.
West Vancouver Police quickly responded, set up a containment perimeter around the home, and requested the Integrated Police Dog Service to assist. As WVPD officers started to breach the front door, the suspect fled through the rear exit, where he was confronted by waiting officers and safely taken into custody.
Paul Smith, 48, of Vancouver has been charged with one count of Break and Enter. He will appear in North Vancouver Provincial Court on May 13th, 2026.
“The case demonstrates the value of a functioning and activated security system”, says Sgt. Chris Bigland. “Combined with a timely report, it allowed us to interrupt a crime in progress and secure a criminal charge”.
