Residential Break-ins

An important reminder from our Crime Alerts this week, to be wary of strangers asking for access to your home, including multi-unit buildings.  A resident of an Ambleside area multi-unit building reported an unknown male following them into the building, then falsely claiming he was in the building to conduct fire alarm testing. The resident was then persuaded to allow the suspect into the suite.  After the suspect left, cash and other items were discovered missing. If you don’t recognize or know a person seeking access to your building, do not let them tailgate you into your building, on foot or in a vehicle. If they are authorized to be in the

Theft / Fraud

A familiar Fraud offence resurfaced in the District since our last update. A resident received a phone call from a suspect falsely claiming to be bank security staff.  The victim was persuaded that a transfer of funds to an account provided by the caller was needed to protect the victim’s money. Funds were transferred before the victim realized a fraud was in progress.  Banks will not contact you in this way to request fund transfers over the phone.

Another Fraud attempt in our alerts this week.  A resident discovered their purse, and wallet had been stolen while at a Dundarave area restaurant. The victim then began receiving calls from a suspect claiming to be bank security investigating unauthorized transactions. The victim was asked for their PIN code to assist bank staff but correctly recognized the calls were a fraud attempt resulting from the theft.  The call was immediately ended. Fraudulent transactions were attempted but were declined.
