West Vancouver, B.C. – A spike in residential Break and Enters prompts police warning
The West Vancouver Police Department is alerting the Public to a recent increase in Break and Enters to residential properties. “We are alerting the public to this crime trend in the hope that residents can review their home security plans and take proactive steps to prevent themselves from falling victim to this type of crime”, said Sgt Chris Bigland.
Tips for homeowners include:
- Immediately report any/all suspicious activity to Police
- Ensure existing security systems and alarms are functioning and activated when homes are vacant (even for a short time)
- Ensure the entire home is protected, including upper floors
- Consider upgrading CCTV cameras to modern, high-quality products which can be purchased at a reasonable price
- Conceal safes within the home and do not store them in the master bedroom
- Engage with neighbours and let them know if you are travelling out of town
- Join WVPD Blockwatch
- Ensure your master bedroom has a motion alarm. Thieves often target master bedrooms, which are often not equipped with motion detectors
- Keep ladders indoors
“The WVPD is focused on identifying and catching those committing these offences”, said Bigland. “Please call us immediately if you see something or someone suspicious in your neighbourhood”.
