Two West Vancouver Police officers have helped a Lower Mainland team in a new record setting fight to support children and families facing cancer!

Youth Liaison officer Cst. Chris Bigland and Staff Sergeant Tom Wolff Von Gudenberg represented West Vancouver Police on the 2018 Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast.  60c8104b-fd2a-449e-8be9-f2e49bcf521b

Every year since 1998, police officers and emergency responders from West Vancouver and around BC have ridden in fundraising bicycle tours to help the Canadian Cancer Society in the fight childhood cancers.

Cops for Cancer tours in BC have helped raise over 42 million dollars to support pediatric cancer research and patient care programs like Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp program for children and families facing a journey with cancer.

The Tour de Coast is a nine-day bicycle tour by officers and first responders from across the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast and Sea-to-Sky corridor ever September.

The tour included several stops in West Vancouver September 24th, to thank school, community and business supporters of this annual fight.

As a team, Tom and Chris committed to raise a minimum of $12,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society to ride in the Tour de Coast. As Tom and Chris concluded their tour, West Vancouver Police Cops for Cancer riders and Support Team members had raised over $33,707.82 and will welcome any additional support you can offer!

That helped push the overall Tour de Coast team to a new fundraising record of $680,000 for the 2018 tour, up dramatically from the $610,000 fundraising total for the 2017 Tour de Coast.

West Vancouver Schools provided amazing support for our riders this year.  From Cancer Prevention Awareness Weeks at both Sentinel Secondary and Rockridge Secondary, to the Fourth Annual 'Toonie Drive' in School District #45 elementary schools, and Superintendent Chris Kennedy's participation in the Cops for Cancer Jail and Bail at Park Royal,  West Vancouver Schools contributed over $8000 to this year's Cops for Cancer fundraising.

The Cops for Cancer Jail & Bail event hosted and supported by Park Royal raised over $10,000 to support all North Shore Cops for Cancer riders.  Thank you to all community partners who agreed to be 'arrested' and then bailed out with donations!

Mitchell & Nicole Martin of Mitchell's Towing donated $1000 to the Park Royal Jail & Bail and a further $2000 to West Vancouver Police Cops for Cancer riders.  City Market Park Royal raised $2300 and counting for our West Vancouver riders by collecting donations at grocery check-outs.

West Vancouver Kiwanis kindly donated $1000. Ambleside Tiddleycove Lions annually host the full Tour de Coast for a team dinner on the opening night of our tour with an additional donation in support of all North Shore riders.

“Cops for Cancer really is about inspirational kids, caring communities and committed cops,” says Chief Cst Len Goerke. “We wish Tom and Chris the best on their ride and we're grateful for all our community partners and supporters. We hope many more will help support this worthy cause before Tom and Chris finish their ride."

Canadian Cancer Society direct links for on-line donations to West Vancouver Police riders are available all day every day.  Donations go directly to our cause.  Tax receipts are emailed to you.
