A charge has now been laid following West Vancouver Police investigation of an alleged sexual assault in early January.
On January 02, 2019, West Vancouver Police received a report alleging a taxi passenger had been sexually assaulted by a driver.
Police were advised the alleged victim was seated in a taxi shortly before 1am, January 2 nd, waiting for a friend in the 100 block of Whonoak Road in West Vancouver.
The alleged victim stated they were grabbed in the genital area by the suspect, before the suspect took the victim’s hand and forcibly placed it in contact with the suspect’s genital area, which had been exposed through an open zipper.
The alleged victim and friend reported to police after safely returning home.
Following subsequent investigation, a suspect was arrested January 17 th, 2019 at West Vancouver Police Headquarters and released on conditions pending a first appearance at North Vancouver Provincial Court. A report recommending a charge of Sexual Assault was forwarded to Crown Counsel. The suspect was served a West Vancouver Taxi Permit revocation letter and surrendered his permit.
Crown Counsel subsequently approved a charge of Sexual Assault, Section 271 C.C.C.
60-year-old Deepak SHARMA of Abbotsford made a first appearance at North Vancouver Provincial Court March 06, 2019. The matter is now set for a further court appearance March 20, 2019.
