The West Vancouver Police Department supports and encourages an open and transparent dialogue with the public. We understand that from time to time, Freedom of Information requests are made with the implication that the information being requested is in the public interest and important for the public to know. In the spirit of open communication, we have chosen to share the results of these requests, below.
Drug Possession and Trafficking Offences 2014-2020 YTD
Each year the West Vancouver Police Department investigates numerous drug related offences as defined by the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). The CDSA is Canada’s federal control statute, passed in 1996, respecting the control of certain drugs, their precursors and other substances. Below is a breakdown, of drug possession and trafficking offences investigated by WVPD in which charges were recommended to Crown. Drug possession is defined as the person having physical control over an illegal substance while drug trafficking is defined as the selling, administering, giving, transferring, transporting, sending or delivering of an illegal substance.
Important information about the report:
- Offences limited to: heroin possession, heroin trafficking, illegal prescription opioid possession, illegal prescription opioid trafficking, illegal amphetamine possession, illegal amphetamine trafficking, methamphetamine possession, methamphetamine trafficking, ecstasy (methylenedioxyamphetamine) possession, ecstasy (methylenedioxyamphetamine) trafficking, cocaine possession and cocaine trafficking.
- In addition to serving the District of West Vancouver, the West Vancouver Police serve the Squash Nation reserve, Xwemelch’stn – Capilano, the largest community of the Skwxwú7mesh Stelmexw (Squamish People) on the North Shore.
- The data was pulled based on the UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting) code assigned to the file in accordance with UCR guidelines established by the Canadian Centre for Justice and Community Safety Statistics.
- The UCR code will align with the type of drugs located during the investigation and the type of offence (trafficking/possession) recommended by the lead investigator.
- The UCR code reflects the police investigation ONLY and does not reflect what charges Crown ultimately decided to prosecute
