The Value Of A Suspicious Persons Call

Alert neighbours promptly reporting suspicious persons or circumstances was key in reducing the risk of crimes & loss in two neighbourhoods over the past week.

From the Dundarave area, a report was received of two males, walking in rear lanes, appearing to check vehicles and storage areas.  Patrol officers responded promptly, locating & checking the males.  One was found to be subject of an outstanding arrest warrant, and in possession of break-in tools in breach of conditions from a prior Court appearance. Additional charges are being recommended.

In the Ambleside/Queens Avenue area, officers following up on a suspicious persons call, checked two people.  Property from a garage break-in that hadn’t been reported yet was recovered for return later to the rightful owner. Charges will be recommended against the suspects. We appreciate the support of every Block Watch participant, who help watch over our neighbours & community.

Theft

In both Suspicious Person reports noted above, behaviours were consistent with suspects casing areas for theft opportunities. It should serve as a reminder that suspects will come to our community intent on committing offences.  Taking proactive steps to reduce your risk of loss is always best. Unfortunately, several Theft reports this week involved valuables left in unlocked vehicles. Thefts occurred in multi-unit building garages, single family home garages and in vehicles parked in both residential & commercial areas. Your best defence is to avoid leaving valuables in any vehicle left unattended, whether the vehicle is locked or not.

Meantime, if your recreation plans include a day on the mountain, we encourage you to consider how you can secure your skis or snowboards when taking a break from the slopes.  Two reports this week of snowboards being stolen, after being left unsecured on racks outside lodges.

Anytime you see activity of concern, please don’t hesitate to call West Vancouver Police. Call 604-925-7300 for non-emergency matters. Call 9-1-1 in an emergency, including events that involve immediate danger to any person or a substantive crime in progress.  For updated crime alerts anytime click westvanpolice.ca/crime-alerts.
