West Vancouver Police have responded to 644 calls for service over the two weeks since our last update.
School Zones
We wish everyone a great last long weekend of Summer! Then please prepare to drive with extra caution around schools & playgrounds next week, as students head back to West Vancouver Schools Tuesday, September 5th. Remember every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30 km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In playground zones, a 30 km/h speed limit is in effect every day from dawn to dusk. Officers from our Patrol, Community Services Team & Traffic Enforcement Team will join our Speed Watch Volunteers paying extra attention to school & playground zones.
Youth Gatherings
The last weekend before school can bring increased reports of noisy youth gatherings at homes, in public parks, open areas and elsewhere, often with associated Liquor Act offences, property damage, and unfortunately some youth related violence. We ask community members to be watchful for & promptly report any gatherings of concern, especially considering a substantial increase in youth related conflict in public areas of the District noted in early July.
Break-ins
Unlocked doors & unsecured entry points provided more easy paths for offenders since our last update. Among five Residential Break-in reports in our Crime Alerts, an unlocked basement suite door in the Caulfeild cleared the way for theft of a personal computer. In Dundarave, vehicle keys were stolen from a residence. No indication of forced entry was identified. If you are getting away for Labor Day, please check & double check that your home is secure with any security or alarm systems working and property set before you leave.
Protect Yourself Against Fraud
Reported Fraud offences in West Vancouver since our last update included a victim contacted by a suspect falsely claiming to represent a package delivery company. The victim was told their account had been used in a fraudulent purchase and was directed to contact a person identified as a lawyer to resolve the matter. Sadly, the victim transferred payment by digital currency to the purported lawyer before realizing it was a scam.
An Ambleside resident responded to an online job posting and was told they would be hired. They were then asked to forward money for an application processing fee. Funds were transferred before victim recognized a scam was in progress.
WVPD in the Community – ‘Car 22’
West Vancouver Police and North Vancouver RCMP work in partnership on the North Shore Integrated Outreach Team.
Police officers & medical professionals team up to provide specialized outreach & support for marginalized & vulnerable persons in the community facing mental health challenges. Car 22 is funded by Vancouver Coastal Health through the Ministry of Mental Health & Addictions.
