Spring Break

School Spring Breaks are upon us.  Before you depart for that long-awaited trip, take time to review & check home security.  Is your alarm properly set? Have you arranged for family or a friend to check your home while you’re away, and clear any mail or delivery items?   If you rely on a web-based alarm or camera system that sends alerts to your smart phone or tablet, bear in mind, you will not receive alerts if you are aboard a plane, ship or anywhere without internet connectivity. Consider having a family member or friend monitor your alerts while you are away.

March is Fraud Prevention Month

West Vancouver Police and Block Watch join policing partners across the country this month in a campaign urging all to understand & prevent Fraud.  Fraud offences are persistent and frequently target vulnerable & Elderly persons. You are encouraged to share any Fraud Prevention information we bring you through Block Watch with your family & personal network.

Bail Money Scam

From our Crime Alerts this week, a very familiar scam to watch for.  An elderly resident reported a call from a suspect claiming the resident’s friend was under arrest and needed money sent via package courier to resolve the matter.  The resident complied with the request, sending money to a Quebec address but then got extremely lucky. The package delivery company found no-one at the address provided and couldn’t complete the delivery. Meantime, the victim realized they had been scammed & called police. A patrol officer assisted the resident in contacting the package delivery company to cancel the delivery and have the package & cash returned. Police will never ask for bail or release money to be forwarded by cash delivery, gift cards or wire transfer.  If you receive a request like this, it is a scam.  Disconnect the call immediately.
