Summer Heat & Home Security
The forecast indicates we are headed for daytime temperatures in the mid to high 20’s over the next week to ten days with the potential for even higher temperatures as mid-summer approaches. Higher summer temperatures can create seasonal crime risks, and it is vital to be alert in advance.
Homes can become more tempting to criminals with windows and doors left open more frequently, and homeowners often spending less time at home. If you are staying home or plan to be away, take time to secure any door or window that will be unattended, either while you are busy socializing or sleeping.
Criminals look for easy opportunities, and inattention to security details during the summer months can help present suspects with an opening to commit an offence. If you are leaving your home for errands, take time to secure any accessible entries. If you need ventilation of an open window or sliding door, ensure you have adequate secondary locks installed that allow the entry or window to be open, but not wide enough for a suspect to enter through.
If you are travelling away from home for vacation:
- Arrange for a trusted family member or friend to periodically check your home and collect mail or delivery items while you are gone.
- Before you go, confirm all doors & windows are secure
- If you have an alarm system, you should make sure it’s working and use it.
- Unplug your garage door opener and lock your garage door.
- Wait until you are back home before posting about your trip on social media.
